Ruby Rhod is one of my favorite characters in sci-fi ever because he is Luc Besson’s vision of the hetero sex symbol of the future: a flamboyant, emotionally labile man who wears skin-tight leopard print or decks himself in roses, a man who accessorizes with big jewelry and dabbles in cosmetics. And the ladies love him. Everything about him screams “gay” according to our stereotypes, but he’s portrayed as a 100% straight sexual dynamo.

Besson is one of the few directors I’ve seen who actually recognizes that our ideas of sexuality and gender performance might have changed drastically in the future.

He also has one of the most jarring entrances in a movie. Like the entire movie screeches to a halt because he bursts onto the scene well into the second act and it’s so strange and arresting and Bruce Willis is just like “what the fuck is even going on anymore?”

It’s p. great.

Every time I see him on a list of “most annoying characters” i dispair. Do people seriously watch The Fifth Element for anything else?

I love Ruby Rhod for president. He’ll sign all legislation with a red paint using a house brush.

You see, it’s not that the driver has his light on while himself wanting to get to a particular location and will pick me up if and only if I happen to want to also get to that location. It’s that I pay him to take me where I ask him to take me.

Come on, now. You can do better than this.

The example I always use is if we see a black man with a basketball, we don’t even have to process that. We’ve seen it so many times in our lives, we know exactly what that means. If we were to see a black man with a violin, that gives us reason to pause, right? We have all of these questions that are now attached, you know, how did he get the violin? Does he know how to play the violin? How can he afford the violin? I mean we can go on and on.
Hip-hop becomes a very interesting space in this conversation because it [has] monetized the image of black masculinity, and made several of these figures incredibly wealthy - the Jay-Zs and the Snoop Doggs and the Will Smiths But it’s also a space that limits our understanding of the range of possibilities of what black masculinity can look like.

I’m sick of this “cool” tattooed white boy barber obsessed with the 50s trend that’s been going on. It’s so boring. Sure pompadours and high and tights look great but this whole dapper bullshit is getting obnoxious.

You know who are the coolest barbers? They black barbers I go to in the hood where I can get a $12 cut.

This whole 40s/50s aesthetic is so fucking played out.

How homonationalism works:

1) The Inclusion Argument: Sexual minorities should call for inclusion in the state through liberal rights of the individual (e.g. gay marriage). The struggle for individual rights replaces the struggle for collective rights, collective resistance, or the transformation of asymmetrical power formations.

2) Good vs. Bad Queers: The call for inclusion is predicated on making the distinction between good queers and bad queers. These appeals argue that most sexual minorities are no different than members of dominant society, and thus that these queers deserve to be recognized as part of the mainstream. Here, bad queers are offered as the undesirable other to help sell the good queers to Canadian society, since bad queers are dangers to society or drains on state resources. They include racialized queers, people who are HIV-positive, poor and homeless queers, drug users, non-status queer migrants, etc.

3) Reinforcing the Social Order: Once the right kind of queers are welcomed into the state, these institutions can use the newly admitted ‘good queers’ as evidence that symmetry has been achieved, effectively dismissing larger concerns over the rights of those who remain marginalized and subjugated. Further, the inclusion of sexual minorities under the terms of individual rights is then used in propaganda by the state to demonstrate how civilized, modern, liberal, and democratic the West is, particularly in opposition to backward, pre-modern, and non-democratic states (such as in the Middle East) – a tactic rooted in Orientalism.
